Renal Medicine

What type of work to expect and learning opportunities:

During your time with us you will:
• Learn how to assess and manage AKI • Renal pharmacy including immunosuppressants and nephrotoxic medications
• Opportunities to participate in clinical audit • Learn how to manage CKD complications
• Observe and potentially perform a temporary dialysis line insertion • Basic principles of HD/PD/transplant
• Learn how to manage medical emergencies in general medicine

Your Main Duties:
• Daily inpatient care for general medicine and nephrology • Arrange investigations • Discussions with relatives

Rotation 3

Colorectal Surgery

What type of work to expect and learning opportunities:
The Department of General and Colorectal Surgery comprises of 8 consultants. There are 4 F1s in the
department, each of whom is allocated to a team of two consultants. During this rotation you will gain
experience in the management of common acute and elective General and Colorectal conditions. The
placement will allow you to develop the majority of the competencies required in the F1 curriculum.

Clinical duties are as follows:
• Initial assessment and management of emergency surgical admissions
• Maintaining hospital notes and drug charts
• Prescribing drugs and IV fluids
• Requesting referrals to other services
• Exposure to surgery in the operating theatre
• Initial assessment and management of ward patients who become unwell
• Assisting with ward rounds
• Preparing discharge summaries
• Preparing patients for surgery
• Participation in audit and morbidity /mortality presentations
• Communication with patients and their relatives
• Requesting investigations, documenting results and acting upon them
• Team working • Fulfil requirements of the placement e.g. CBD, mini CEX, DOPs

Your typical working pattern in this placement could be:
You will participate in a 1 in 8 on-call day time rota with your own team and remain with the same team to
support post-take ward work. This allows you to experience the whole patient journey while managing
common acute surgical conditions. Once every 4 weeks, you will be allocated time to join the operating
theatres, endoscopy and clinics with your clinical supervisor.

There are no night duties and this post attracts a 1B banding.

Rotation 1

Haematology & Oncology

ES/CS:

Dr A Mullard

What type of work to expect and learning opportunities:
During your 4 month rotation, you will gain experience in both oncology and haematology. Flexibility and team work on Alaw ward are key, and with your colleagues, you will support one another to ensure patients are seen and tasks completed.

You will gain experience in the complications of cancer, its treatment as well as end of life care. As well as the main inpatient unit, you will gain experience in the day therapy unit as well as the new oncology assessment unit.

By the end of the placement you will have improved your knowledge, skills and confidence in general oncology, haematology, oncological emergencies and end of life care, including difficult conversations and when to refer to the specialist palliative care team for support. You will be welcome and encouraged to attend clinic in the afternoons when the ward is well staffed.

Rotation 3

Acute Internal Medicine

What type of work to expect and learning opportunities:
The FY2 will be part of the Acute Medicine team looking after acute admissions and patients in ambulatory
care.

Trainees are supported by daily ward rounds of the consultant acute physicians. The Acute Medicine firm is (kind of) famous for our research output - from working with world leading technology companies to hosting the national audit in acute medicine to testing new ways of working with patients to deliver better care.

We love having trainees and hope that the FY2 will be willing to share their knowledge with the FY1s, the 3rd, 4th and 5th year medical students and the Physician Associate students that we are regularly our guests.
